Saint-Point castle
Alphonse de Lamartine is a poet, writer and politician.
He was one of the major figures of French Romanticism. Saint-Point feudal castle was bought in 1801 by the poet’s father and Alphonse settled there in 1820, after his marriage to an English aristocrat, Mary Ann Birch. Restored and increased, the castle remained his family property until his death in 1869.
During a visit, you can see original period furnishings, objects and memories of his private and political life, as well as the complete literary works of Lamartine. At the end of the park, near a roman church, is the tomb of the poet, with his motto “speravit anima mea” (my soul has hoped).
